but the one who examines me is the Lord.

Of a Christian, especially one who holds an office in Christ’s church, has been said to live in a glass house.
And the practice of life teaches us that this is all too true.
When a Christian, and certainly when a pastor stumbles on the slippery path of life, the world, and especially the pious world, is immediately ready for judgment.
Without being asked for circumstances or backgrounds,
without knowing, how all this is struggled through in the soul by the person concerned, such a person is quickly convicted. That hurts.
But it is even more painful if one has not stumbled, but one simply has to do with a perception of the outside, while one himself was filled with the noblest of intentions.
In such a case, our conscience can acquit us, and indeed that may be a justifiable statement. But we can still deceive ourselves.
There is, however, One Who knows the Heart, Who is never mistaken.
That is the Lord.
We may be happy, when we can leave the judgment to Him, as the apostle did.
He who judges me is the Lord. His judgment is merciful and just.
