Matthew 3:15 NASB
But Jesus answering said to him,

Jesus acknowledged John’s objection, but said that he must admit Him anyway, because they both (ʻso befits us’) had to obey every divine institution (dikaiosunē).
Since John’s baptism was for all Israelites, Jesus as an Israelite had to undergo it too (cf. Matthew 5:17). He had to become like His brothers in all respects.
Furthermore, baptism marked the beginning of His ministry for Jesus (see Matthew 3:16).
