Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Suddenly he was there, the son of the desert.
And he told the people straight what they had to do: Repent …
That was a message that was different from the vision of the Pharisees. For they also waited for the kingdom of heaven.
The coming of that Kingdom had to be thoroughly prepared.
After all, there had to be suitable citizens for that Empire.
And that, one could become by strictly observing the Law.
Actually, the Pharisees proclaimed: Repent, and then the Kingdom will come.
John says it differently: Repent, for the kingdom is at hand.
That Kingdom will not come through our effort.
It comes from the other side.
And now there is only one attitude possible: repentance.
A different attitude, a different way of thinking.
Repentance is necessary, and repentance is possible.
Not from us, but because the King has come.
Who by Word and Spirit wins subjects for His Kingdom.
