In the first verses of the Gospel of John, John 1:4-5, Jesus is presented to us as life and light.
⁴In Him was life, and the life was the LIGHT OF MEN. ⁵The LIGHT SHINES in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Even today the world cannot comprehend the light that God’s Word brings into it. They see it but cannot understand it, unless God calls them to it. And opens their eyes for it.
So God’s light has to shine continually in this world. And there is a task for the followers of the Christ too.
Remember that DARKNESS is nothing else than the ABSENCE OF LIGHT.
In John 8:12
Then Jesus again spoke to them (the pharisees), saying, “I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the LIGHT OF LIFE.”
So clearly we have to follow the Christ to walk in the light. And when we have His light we can see where we are going, and we don’t have to stumble or fall. (John 11:9-10).
As long as we have light we have to what God tells us to do. As we read in John 9:4-5: ⁴We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. ⁵While I am in the world, I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.”
Jesus was and is still in this world.
2.000 years ago He walked the earth AMONG US; now He is through His Holy Spirit IN US on earth.
So if the Christ is now in us through the Holy Spirit, than now we have to shine His light into the darkness of this world. Can we?
SHARE THE LIGHT that is in you
In Matthew 5:14-16 we read that Jesus said: ¹⁴”YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; ¹⁵nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. ¹⁶Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
So when WE are the light of the world, WE have to shine the light that is inside us, in such a way that it will be seen by anyone who comes in our neighborhood. Like a city that is on a hill will also be seen by anybody who comes in it’s surroundings, and like a lamp that gives light, will be seen by all who are in the house.
Let your light, that is the life and love of the Christ that is within you, shine before men in such a way, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
The light within you must be HIS LIGHT. In Matthew 6:22-23 we read ²²”The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. ²³But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
I want to emphasize these last words:
If the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness..! So make sure your eyes are upon Jesus and know that He alone is your source of light. Any other form of light is only fake and artificial.
John 12:36 — While you HAVE THE LIGHT, BELIEVE IN THE LIGHT, so that you may become SONS OF LIGHT.
LOVE FOR DARKNESS
Many also hate the light that the Gospel brings for that light reveals their wrong doings. As we read in John 3:19-21: ¹⁹This is the judgment, that the Light (Jesus) has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. ²⁰For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. ²¹But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.
1 John 1:7 — “If we are walking in the light, as he is in the light, we are all united with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son makes us clean from all sin.”
Let me end today with the verse we started with ⁴”In Him was life, and the life was the LIGHT OF MEN. ⁵The LIGHT SHINES in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend (John 1:4-5)
