I know that in some African and other cultures it is a form of politeness to call an older man “father” or something similar.
Also some called me “teacher”. In the secular world this is acceptable for a schoolteacher, but in the realm of the Christians this is not okay.
Therefore I ask you not to call me “father” or “teacher”, not even pastor as that lays in the same range of titles.
When we read Matthew 23:5-12 we see what Jesus said about this.
We should not look for honor, as all honor belongs to God.
(5) They do all their deeds TO BE NOTICED BY MEN; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments. (6) They LOVE THE PLACE OF HONOR at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, (7) and RESPECTFUL GREETINGS in the market places, and BEING CALLED RABBI by men.
(8) But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and YOU ARE ALL BROTHERS.
Here you have it, not teacher, but just brother.
(9) Do not call anyone on earth father; for ONE IS YOUR FATHER, He who is in heaven.
This is where Roman Catholics also go wrong. So please don’t call me father, just brother is good enough.
(10) Do not be called leaders; for ONE IS YOUR LEADER, that is, Christ.
And although some see me as a leader, I’m not, the Christ is.
(11) But the GREATEST among you shall be your SERVANT. (12) Whoever EXALTS himself shall be HUMBLED; and whoever HUMBLES himself shall be EXALTED.
So you may call me brother, friend, or just by my name, Harry, or even mr. Schoemaker if you want. But I prefer not to be called by the titles Jesus said not to use.
