And straightway
the father of the child cried out,
and said with tears,
Lord, I believe;
help thou mine unbelief.
Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
The confession of this father must touch us somewhere deep in our hearts because we recognize ourselves in him.
That father went to see the Lord Jesus with his unfortunate son, but He was not there. He was on top of the Mount of Transfiguration. And whatever the disciples who were left behind do, they can’t deliver that boy from that evil spirit.
Then the Savior comes down from the mountain and that boy is brought to Him.
That is so great that we may go to the Lord Jesus with our children, also, yes especially, with our children who are pulled away from God’s way by evil powers.
Then the Lord points out to that father that everything is possible for him who believes. And then comes the answer, which is given in tears: I believe, Lord, but help my unbelief.
That is also what is felt so often by us: Lord, I cannot miss you and I take refuge in You, I believe, Lord, but the powers that draw me away are so strong: O come to the aid of my unbelief!
