1 John 3:4-6
⁴Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
⁵You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.
⁶No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him.
You may have been to the mountains before.
It is very nice to walk there on narrow paths along all kinds of deep ravines.
When you walk there, you notice how the danger pulls you. Because it is of course the most fun to look over the edge of the path as far as possible, so that you can see the ravine well.
Still, it’s best to just watch the path so you don’t fall.
Perhaps such an exciting mountain hike is a good reflection of our lives. Believers also walk on a narrow path, along which all kinds of temptations and dangers meet us.
Sometimes we tend to stray from the path.
Then we are in the danger zone.
John indicates that danger zone with ‘sin’.
It is a sin to deviate from God’s path.
He makes a very striking statement about this: “If you abide in Christ, you will not sin.”
Does this mean that some people are no longer sinners?
No, that’s not what John means. He is referring to sins that you very deliberately cling to. These sins keep getting in the way of your relationship with the Lord. You threaten to grow away from God because of this. And that is not the intention. For His path is by far the most beautiful route.
