1 John 3:1
See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us,
that we would be called children of God; and such we are.
For this reason the world does not know us,
because it didn’t know Him.
Are you, a child of God?
Perhaps fear strikes you because of this question.
What a direct question this is.
Do I really have to answer that?
Let’s get this straight, you’re not a child of God because you’ve done so well yourself.
John starts on the other side: with God.
He writes, “Behold how great a love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God.”
It is due to God’s great love that believers are called children of God.
That is why we need not be frightened by that direct question: “Are you a child of God?”
That question does not bring us to ourselves, but to the love of our Father in Heaven.
John calls this love a ‘great’ love.
The word ‘great’ also has the meaning of: amazing, wonderful. It is also something to marvel at. To marvel at, that God says, “You are my child.” There is only one answer to that: “My Father, thank you very much!”
