1 John 2:28
Now, little children, abide in Him,
so that when He appears,
we may have confidence
and not shrink away from Him
in shame at his coming.
To abide in Him, that is, in Christ, we must first be in Him.
Are you in Christ?
▪︎You are if you are united to Him by sincere faith.
▪︎You are so if you have been convinced of sin by the Holy Spirit, and have taken refuge in this Surety and Saviour.
Then you are a child. A newborn baby. Then you are most desirous of the rational unadulterated milk, that through it you may grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Then your desire is to know Him and the power of His resurrection.
How do you abide in Him?
If the anointing you have received from Him abides in you. That is the Holy Spirit, uniting to Christ, conforming to the image of Christ.
That Spirit must not grieve you. For then He withdraws into His precious workings. Then it becomes barren and dead within your soul.
Then David committed adultery and Peter denial with curses and oaths.
Therefore the admonition: Abide in Him in previous prayers, in the faithful and prayerful observation of the means, in persevering in the Word, in a tender life, very dependent on Him.
