1 John 2:24
As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning.
If what you heard from the beginning abides in you,
you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.
John here calls the church to abide by what she has heard from the beginning. And that is no different than Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
That means that He vicariously went the way of suffering, death and resurrection.
On that foundation we may confidently trust for our salvation, and we do not do it in vain.
And that must now remain in us, in spite of all the erroneous teachings that try to pull the church away from this solid foundation.
As beautiful as it may sound, we will again and again have to test all things against this foundation.
You may go to church to listen to the Holy Gospel. Thus we can be equipped and called upon to faith and repentance, and to hold on to abiding by what we have heard from the beginning.
That is for the glory of God, for the edification of the church, and for our own salvation.
