1 John 2:15
Don’t love the world
nor the things in the world.
If anyone loves the world,
the love of the father is not in him.
What a beastly worldly love we have, according to Calvin’s word.
We have a job here.
We cannot and must not avoid the world.
But to love the world, that is what John means,
▪︎that we are absorbed in it,
▪︎that we are dominated by it,
▪︎that we are drawn away from God.
And isn’t that terrible?
We are urgently admonished by our text.
If we love the world, the love of the Father is not in us.
They are not compatible, they are mutually exclusive.
It will be true that one who knows the love of the Father discovers so much world love in himself. But it is also true that our heart is where our treasure is.
Happy if we are trained in the sojourn.
Today we must honestly find out before God where our treasure is.
