1 John 2:3
By this we know that we have come to know Him,
if we keep His commandments.
Do you know God?
Perhaps you will answer: How do I know?
Do you know God with your heart?
You answer: What then must I experience in my heart? What feeling must there be inside?
It is very difficult for us to give a sensible answer.
Self-examination is not so easy.
All too often we try to count some of our selves before God.
The apostle wants to give us a helping hand in this scripture through the Holy Spirit.
Do you know God?
Then you keep His commandments.
Then you esteem it highly and then you act upon them.
Are the commandments a pleasure or a burden to you?
Perhaps someone will answer honestly: They should be pleasing, but I feel like they block my way all too often!
In that case you already indicate how it is in your heart.
He who knows God, heartily keeps His commandments.
