1 John 2:2
And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins;
and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
In his letter, just as in the Gospel, John wants to praise the Lord Jesus as savior.
Having spoken of Him as the great Advocate, he expects the objection, “But my guilt is too great, I sinned too much.” That is why he is now going to speak about the Lord in an image that is connected to the temple service.
Atonement was made on the Day of Atonement by the blood that the high priest sprinkled on the ark of the covenant. Thus the guilt of Israel was covered before God’s holy eyes.
The blood of the Lamb of God sprinkles many more sins.
Those of the whole world!
No one can say there is no forgiveness for him or her.
The sufficiency of the mediatorial work of Christ must not be questioned.
Will the whole world be saved then?
No, that requires faith.
And that faith is:
▪︎ Let yourself be cleansed;
▪︎ Let yourself be reconciled with God through Him.
