1 John 2:2
And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins;
and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
And He is the propitiation for our sins.
Propitiation – Gr.: hilasmós – properly, propitiation; an offering to appease (satisfy) an angry, offended party (in this case God).
Hilasmós is only used twice (in 1 John 2:2, and 4:10) – both times of Christ’s atoning blood that appeases God’s wrath, on all confessed sin. By the sacrifice of Himself, Jesus Christ provided the ultimate “hilasmós” (propitiation).
Our sins are covered. Something goes over it, so they can’t be seen anymore. What’s going over it?
John writes, “He is the propitiation for our sins.” The Lord Jesus gives Himself, His blood to cover our sins. Thus they become invisible to God’s eyes. There is nothing in this world that can cover our sins but the Christ’s sacrifice on the cross!
His blood delivers us from the wrath of God.
From God’s side, the separation has been removed.
On our part, that requires faith, and acceptance.
My sins are also covered.
But how can I be sure?
That assurance gives the text, “He is the propitiation for our sins.” It doesn’t say “maybe” or “if you meet those certain conditions”. No, just trust these words now, let that be our resting point.
And cast away the doubts, those troublemakers, with the Word: “It is written, He is the propitiation for our sins.”
That’s for sure.
