1 John 2:1
my little children,
I am writing these things to you
so that you may not sin.
And if anyone sins,
we have an Advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ the righteous

With these words – Calvin says – the apostle summarizes almost the entire Gospel one more time. Here we read the great mystery of salvation.
Not that John thought of the possibility that any of his readers would be without sin.
There’s an invitation in that “if anyone”. Just read: “because you…” And then he points you to the great Intercessor.
That word comes from the courtroom.
There stands an accused; he must agree with the judge in everything. “I have been wrong; “I have sinned.” Then there is also a lawyer with that judge. He’s going to plead. He doesn’t justify the crime. He doesn’t say, “Oh, it’s not that bad.”
No, this lawyer is called: the Just.
He has already borne the punishment Himself.
He offers the heavenly Judge an exchange. Give Me the punishment.
And that sinner? Give him… gave her pardon.
That’s grace! Such is Jesus!
Give Him your lost cause.
