2 Chronicles 14:1-7
¹So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David, and his son Asa became king in his place. The land was undisturbed for ten years during his days.
²Asa did good and right in the sight of the Lord his God, ³for he removed the foreign altars and high places, tore down the sacred pillars, cut down the Asherim, ⁴and commanded Judah to seek the Lord God of their fathers and to observe the law and the commandment.
⁵He also removed the high places and the incense altars from all the cities of Judah. And the kingdom was undisturbed under him.
⁶He built fortified cities in Judah, since the land was undisturbed, and there was no one at war with him during those years, because the Lord had given him rest.
⁷For he said to Judah, “Let us build these cities and surround them with walls and towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours because we have sought the Lord our God; we have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered.
Devotional
You are one of …
You sometimes hear this being said.
You apparently look a lot like your father or your mother, they may mean your appearance or your demeanor.
It is striking in the book Chronicles that very often the son does not resemble his father.
King Asa is completely different from his father Abia.
After many wars, there is a long period of peace during King Asa.
What is Asa doing now during this rest period?
Asa tackles idolatry.
He fights anyway, but now with the devil.
- Down with superstitions,
- no place for occultism.
- No place for idols.
Most students have just finished their vacation, a rest period, but have we, like Asa, also been engaged in the fight against the idols during that rest period?
What is your heart full of now?
Is that full of the Lord Jesus or filled with our modern idols?
Asa went to fortify the land, building walls and towers to protect himself from the attacks of the evil one.
The mightiest weapon of Asa and ours is God’s Word!
From this Word we may draw strength to keep ourselves standing in this world.
You may feel so lonely, so misunderstood, but remember that, like Asa, you may always cry to the Lord: “Help us, O Lord our God, for we lean on you!”
This gives you strength and courage !!
