Devotional
Your class representative asks a teacher if a rehearsal can’t be canceled, as you have received too much homework. He listens and says: I’ll think about it.
This also Jeroboam heard when he went to visit Rehoboam the son of Solomon on behalf of the people. The people ask whether the new king can make the people pay less tax, because with his father Solomon the taxes were very high!
Rehoboam doesn’t know yet, he hesitates and says, “Come back in 3 days.”
The king is insecure, father used to be determined, but now he is on his own. Does he ask the Lord for advice? No, Rehoboam doesn’t think about this, he forgets the most important thing. He trusts his counselors, but they only think of their own interests.
“I will increase the burden, you must pay even more than with my father!”
This answer is given to Jeroboam. Indignantly the people hear it: “Come on, go home,” they call to each other. We want nothing more to do with this king.
They go and make Jeroboam their own king. Thus the kingdom is torn in two pieces. Rehoboam continues to reign over the Two-tribe kingdom in the south, Jeroboam becomes king over the Ten-tribe kingdom.
