1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins,
He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
John mentions the only way that leads to the pearl of great price: confessing our sins.
There is a plural: sins.
After all, there is a world of iniquity in our hearts.
He who is made honest before God by the Holy Spirit discovers that he has sinned against all God’s commandments and that he has been a sinner before God since he was born.
To confess means to openly admit it.
Don’t hide, but show up.
It does not say to whom we must confess.
John, of course, means for God, but that does not exclude confession of guilt for the people.
How hard it is to have to be the least.
Yet it has to be, says the apostle, and it never disappoints.
He who goes thus to the Father, encounters God’s faithfulness.
That is fidelity to His gracious promises.
He may also get to know the justice of God.
But surely that’s his downfall?
Thank God it is not!
God’s justice is that He gives our sins to His Son.
