1 John 1:8-10
⁸If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
⁹If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
¹⁰If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
If you’ve had a big fight with someone, you can deal with it in two ways.
- You can choose to pretend that nothing happened. But then at the slightest difference of opinion you will get into a fight again.
- It is therefore much better to talk out a conflict completely. It is important that you honestly admit where you have gone wrong.
If you’ve done something wrong to someone, you need to ask for forgiveness – no matter how hard that is. You must also ask the Lord God for forgiveness if you have done something wrong. And that’s different from praying every day, “Lord, will you forgive all my sins?”
He wants you to ask for forgiveness very specifically when you discover a sin.
For example, “Will you forgive me for secretly watching that filthy TV show today?” He wants His relationship with you not to be disturbed.
That’s why it’s so important to be honest and not try to cover up all kinds of sins. For the Lord also gives a great promise.
If you sincerely ask for forgiveness, you will get it.
So you don’t have to ask for forgiveness for the same transgression again the next day.
With Him applies: once forgiven, always forgiven.
