1 John 1:8-10
⁸If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
⁹If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
¹⁰If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
1 John 2:1-2
¹My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;
²and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
- Suppose you gave a big mouth to your father today.
- You also weren’t quite telling the truth when you bragged about your athletic achievements.
- And if you’re honest, you have to admit that you were filthy jealous of your classmate’s roller skates.
Then you have broken at least three commandments of God.
Does that mean God is mad at you now?
It depends.
- He is if you don’t want to admit that you were wrong, and if you actually think that you are right and God is wrong. Then God is indeed angry with you.
- But not if you regret your sins, and ask God’s forgiveness for them. Even if it is for the umpteenth time. Because remember: God already loves you, without you deserving it.
Never think that you have to earn His love yourself, by living decently. You will never be able to do so, and God knows that.
That is why He Himself has already provided a solution for your sins: His Son!
He is the One, to whom the Ten Commandments want to send you again and again when you have gone wrong.
With Him you can always find forgiveness, so you never have to doubt God’s love for you. But then you must go to Him!
