1 John 1:8
If we say we have no sin,
we are deceiving ourselves
and the truth is not in us.
John wrote about the most glorious mystery of the Gospel.
For in the foregoing he spoke of the blood of the Lord Jesus, which purifies from all sin.
The forgiveness of our sins by the grace of God in Jesus, the Christ, is the greatest treasure that has value in life and in death.
But, if you know that there is a treasure somewhere, it is very important to find the way to it.
The apostle wants to show us that way.
First he gives a warning:
There is also a wrong way, which literally leads to a dead end.
That is when you say, “I have no sin” or “I am not a sinner”.
That is a gross lie, which comes from the father of lies.
Yet many people generally want to make gratefully use of this subterfuge.
We like to compare ourselves with others, and think we are neat and decent.
But be honest.
Are not our hearts full of filth?
Don’t cheat yourself!
