1 John 1:8
If we say that we have no sin,
we are deceiving ourselves
and the truth is not in us.
John writes to people who were under the influence of false teachers.
They claimed, “You have no sin.”
Sin, that is the corrupt source in us humans, from which our sinful deeds arise, such as: envy, passion, greed, indulgence, and many others; yes, there is still much to add.
John writes: You are leading yourself astray when you say, “I have no sin.”
In fact, we make God a liar when we say, “I have not sinned.”
The Bible teaches us that all people are sinners.
The suffering and death of Christ testify that God takes sin highly.
The blood of His Son is needed to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
John calls on his readers to confess their sins to God.
Because He is faithful and just, He will forgive.
The call to confess our sins also applies today.
Self-examination reveals a great deal.
David’s plea is therefore no superfluous luxury: “Recreate my heart and cleanse Thou, O LORD,” that filthy fountain of all my wrongdoings.”
