1 John 1:5
This is the message we have heard from Him
and announce to you, that God is Light,
and in Him there is no darkness at all.
Right at the beginning of the letter, Johannes tells us what it is about.
The bottom line is that God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all.
When he speaks here of darkness, we must think of the darkness of sin and death.
Satan is king of that realm of darkness. He is the prince of darkness, who leads men to eternal destruction.
God, however, is a light that overcomes darkness.
This already becomes clear at the morning of creation, where God creates the light in the darkness.
At the same time this means that God cannot have communion with darkness and with the works of darkness. He is holy.
And if we find in ourselves that we belong to darkness, we’ll have to come in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ, who has cried out, “I am the light of the world.” In the darkness of the cross He also conquered my darkness.
