1 John 1:4
These things we write,
so that our joy may be made complete.
The apostle John was allowed to write the last gospel.
It is remarkable that he never mentions himself by name. After all, he cares about that other name. The only name under heaven given unto salvation. That of Jesus Christ.
Now that Johannes has grown old, he picks up the pen again.
Now to write a letter.
- Is anything more to be added to the Gospel?
- Wasn’t that complete yet?
Definitely not!
The gospel contains everything that the church then, and what the church today, needs for salvation. There is no need to add anything anymore.
But you know, it’s always been a struggle to keep the Word of God intact as the Spirit would give it.
Satan is crafty, and he delights in bickering in the church, and people letting go of the Word in their quarrels among themselves.
John has recognized that danger.
He also writes to you and me: “Joy is only in the Word”.
