Luke 20:45-47
⁴⁵And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples,
⁴⁶”Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, ⁴⁷who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
It wasn’t easy for the mothers in Israel when father died.
Mother remained behind with the children.
Most of the time youngchildren had to work hard to earn something.
Often widows got into debts. Debts that grew so large that they lost everything. They could lose their house and even their children.
Many people didn’t care. Also the scribes. They did not sufficiently help the widows with their families. Jesus gets angry about this. He takes widows and orphans in protection.
Take good care for each other. Your prayers have no value if you don’t pay love and attention to those who have problems.
Look around you, who are there who have it difficult?
▪︎Do you interfere with that boy or that girl in your class, for whom others have no attention?
▪︎Do you have an eye for someone else, or are you only busy with yourselves?
While reading the Bible it should become clear to us how Jesus always says: Look around you, watch for the weak, watch for those who are in trouble. Give attention to your neighbor, which is left alone.
The Lord Jesus does not just look for our prayers.
▪︎He also asks what we do more.
▪︎Do we mean something to others?
▪︎After whom do you look today? Who will you visit, or help?
