Matthew 26:63
But Jesus kept silent.
And the high priest said to Him,
“I adjure You by the living God,
that You tell us whether
You are the Christ,
the Son of God.”

Jesus was captured and brought before the Jewish council (The Sanhedrin).
There a flood of (false) accusations hits Him.
Yes, those accusations are so obvious that He doesn’t even bother to answer them.
Jesus was silent.
Where the lie is judge, the truth need not speak.
In ecclesiastical life we also know our polemics, our defense of the truth. And in some cases it is well that we should try to disprove the wrong doctrine about the Lord and the salvation of man.
However, there is also a limit.
As soon as it becomes apparent that arguments are presented which one does not believe oneself, but which are uttered only to vent enmity against the Lord and His Anointed One, a dignified silence befits us.
As He did not, we need not answer to bases.
This day is a day of witness.
The Word may be preached on every Sunday, on every day of rest.
Let us not thereby be tempted to enter into all the sophistication of the hostile world, and pious world, but let us quietly bear witness to the strength, and salvation which is to be found in the Christ for the spiritual dead.
