Matthew 16:26
For what will it profit a man
if he gains the whole world
and forfeits his soul?
Or what will a man give
in exchange for his soul?
Here is spoken of the gathering of earthly goods.
It is described here as follows: to gain the whole world.
Fallen man wants to enjoy what the world has to offer. His heart goes out to the riches, the honor and the pleasures of this time.
But what good would it do him if that would bring an eternal loss?
What gain is there in temporary advantage when it gives eternal loss?
Remember, love to the world brings eternal destruction.
We have only one soul for a never-ending, all-decisive eternity.
All that is of the world will have to be left behind at death. We can take nothing with us in the hour of death.
What good is a treasure of earthly possessions if we are still strangers to the work of grace in the heart? Soul lost is all lost, soul saved is all saved.
Life is so short and fleeting. Life is a vapor and death beckons us every hour.
