Matthew 14:31
Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him,
and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
A shameful lesson for Peter. Peter had to be ashamedly silent on this question. Though the waves had been twice as high, if only Peter had kept his eye on the Lord, no fear would have entered his heart. He should have kept looking to Him Who had said, Come!
Thus God’s child cannot give any reason for wavering.
It is not fitting to judge with pride about Peter’s faltering.
Discovering grace saves from exaltation above Peter. The Savior disapproves of Peter’s wavering, but the wavering Peter is not rejected. After all, Peter was given to Him by the Father. He was written in the Book of Life.
The Son of God would lay down His life for Peter too. Peter was in himself punishable and reprehensible. But the Most High had begun a good work in his heart and would not forsake it. When the Lord points His child to the wavering; then there is shame and humiliation. This be of comfort: God never forsakes the works of his hands.
