Matthew 14:30
But seeing the wind, he became frightened,
and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Peter walked on the water in full confidence. That kind of faith is such a beautiful thing. It glorifies God. But if only this picture of Peter were in the Bible, I wouldn’t know what to do. Because there are far too few moments when I look like him.
How good, therefore, is God that He has not only printed the first photo in the Bible, but also the second. Peter, the sinking one.
Let’s be honest: we don’t paste photos in the album that don’t look good on us. But the Bible is an honest book. There, people are shown as they are. With all their weaknesses and flaws. At some point he loses sight of Jesus. He looks at the wind and the waves and he sinks.
He sinks because he doubts. Doubt, there’s the word two in it. Looking both ways. As long as Peter only has eyes on Jesus, he will walk on the waves. But as soon as he fixes his eyes on the waves, he sinks into the depths. How recognizable is that. No, it’s not the best picture of Peter.
Still, if I do sink for once – and how often that doesn’t happen – then I may know: this photo is also a photo of a child of God. And when I cry out to Him, He will save me.
