Matthew 14:8
Having been prompted by her mother,
she said, “Give me here on a platter
the head of John the Baptist.”
Devotional
Mother and daughter.
Herodias, the granddaughter of Herod the Great, first marries her uncle Philippus. Later, she abandons him to marry his brother Antipas.
Her daughter Salome later marries a half-brother of her father and stepfather.
It is almost impossible to tell apart.
Also, it is radically against all marriage laws.
Because of those two women John the Baptist loses his life.
With such a mother, the dancing daughter’s behavior can be largely explained.
John had the courage to condemn this royal wasp’s nest. He lost his head because of it.
Mother and daughter wanted to silence criticism on their behavior.
Can we tolerate criticism?
Even when that criticism is grounded on ancient biblical laws ?
Whoever goes wrong at a young age, perhaps with the approval of parents, will go from bad to worse.
Unless…
For that, listen to John the Baptist and the One who sent him.
