At first glance we would say: what an inglorious end for such a great man. The King’s herald and trailblazer beheaded in his cell. Without any kind of process. Johannes, the victim of the plot between two women, and of the whim of a frivolous monarch.
He himself could not have imagined that his own words would be fulfilled in this way: He must increase, I must decrease. His task is done.
Wasn’t he just there to bring Bride and Groom together? Now he’s getting fired. His work is done.
Yes, here on Earth. For while his body is beheaded, his soul ascends to his glorious Head in heaven. And after death life is prepared for him, God takes him up in His glory.
