Matthew 11:28 AV
Come unto me,
all [ye] that labour
and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest.
Devotional
The great Danish sculptor, who formed the image of the Savior with incomparable beauty, known among us as “the blessed,” better still “the inviting Christ,” must have remembered those words of the Saviour, as he ensouled his marble.
Blessing indeed, and inviting at the same time, the Savior of the world, in those words, stretched out his hands to a wretched human world.
In that world only those are invited and lured who have something to give, wealth or beauty or honor or power or pleasure. The world outside Christ cares not for the poor and wretched.
However, he does otherwise. He invites everyone without distinction, rich and poor, learned and unlearned, young and old.
It is true that his heart goes out most to the afflicted, and to those who have no helper. But He also knows how to find the restless heart, the bitter mind, or the soul consumed by remorse, behind the smoothed face, or behind the forced smile.
And to all of them, whatever sorrow they may bear, and whatever name they may have acquired here on earth, He addresses His word: Those who are weary and heavy laden, come to Me. I have rest for you.
Does the Savior’s invitation reach you, my friend?
He’s calling you, that’s for sure. He wants you now, for the first time or again, to lay down your burden, whatever it may be, with Him.
