Matthew 12:31
Wherefore I say unto you,
All manner of sin and blasphemy
shall be forgiven unto men:
but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost
shall not be forgiven unto men.
Illustration
By constant, and continued tampering with his moral sense, a man at last comes to that state in which the light of the glory of God, when it shines upon him, produces no effect. No more than the morning sun, shining upon the face of a corpse that lies at the east window.
- When men lie dead, the morning bell calls them not.
- When men lie dead, they do not hear the children on the stairs.
- When men lie dead, their ears are deaf to the sweet sounds of birds outdoors.
- When men lie dead, their eyes do not behold the beauty dispersed all abroad.
And I see men whose moral sense is so dead that it is never touched by all the mercies of God above, nor by all the mercies of God distributed among men below.
(H. W. Beecher.)
