Matthew 5:3 NASB
Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Devotional
The poor in spirit are not those who are socially less fortunate than others. Today many want to read this in the above verse, but it is incorrect.
It is not that the less fortunate, the disadvantaged, are blessed.
Neither rich nor poor is inherently fit for the kingdom of heaven.
Nor are meant those who have less understanding than others.
The poor in spirit are humble and brokenhearted, who have learned to understand their nothingness, who think small of themselves, and rely only on the grace of God in Christ Jesus.
They become poorer in themselves, and at the same time come to see more and more riches in the Christ.
They do not discuss their poverty, but they experience their poverty.
They have lost everything in Adam through their own fault.
Christ became poor for their sakes, that through his poverty they might become rich. Eternal wealth will be their portion. Do you understand this?
Though I am poor and wretched, God does remember me constantly
