He opened His mouth
and began to teach them,

The Lord Jezus is going to speak to a large crowd from a mountain.
He sat down for it. Teachers always did that: they sit, while their students stand.
Now He is going to speak, to teach.
That is what He came for in the first place.
To teach us as a Prophet.
To make known unto us the secret counsel, and will of God unto our redemption.
That is necessary, because …
▪︎ we don’t know God,
▪︎ we don’t know ourselves,
▪︎ we do not know the way to be saved.
Do we need His teaching?
Or do we think we already know everything?
He can’t say anything to pupils who think they know everything.
The ignorant, and the erring, these He teaches.
And whoever falls humbly at His feet will learn His ways from Him.
