Matthew 4:7 NASB
Jesus said to him,
On the other hand, it is written,
You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.
Study
Scripture must be compared with Scripture.
We should never base our understanding on individual scriptures, but on the whole context of God’s Word.
Jesus did not answer as a shrewd scribe, but He used the Word of God as a sword, as a weapon to resist the evil one.
He shows with the quote from Deuteronomy 6:16 (You shall not put the Lord your God to the test), that one should not tempt the Lord God, that is, one should not try God to see how far one can go.
Instead, we must put everything in His hands with faith and trust, knowing that He will provide help at the right time.
