Matthew 4:1 NASB
Then Jesus was led up
by the Spirit into the wilderness
to be tempted by the devil.
Devotional
The temptation of Jesus is a separate chapter at the beginning of His ministry.
After His baptism, Jesus is led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness.
Even before He enters into His public preaching in the midst of the people, He must fight the battle against the great adversary of God and of His Church.
Thus He will come out as the second Adam. Who must fight and win the battle in so much more difficult circumstances than the first.
Then it is fitting that He is led into the wilderness.
In that place He must suffer the terrible temptations of the prince of darkness. It is the place of loneliness and of curse.
The wild beasts are watching for their prey.
Infertility predominates.
Paradise was the residence of the first Adam.
Through our own fault paradise has been closed and we have all earned the desert.
Now He goes into that place of curse and barrenness. And that for us who are worthy to be cursed.
How necessary it is, that we not only use the words, but also understand them in our own lives.
