Matthew 3:15 NASB
But Jesus answering said to him,
Permit it at this time;
for in this way it is fitting for us
to fulfill all righteousness.
Then he permitted Him.
Devotional
Great was the word which the Lord Jesus spoke to John before His baptism.
He is the Greater One, Who knows that He must undergo baptism.
The fulfillment of all righteousness is written in His heart.
Both John and He are called to fulfill all righteousness in this way.
▪︎ John as preparer of the way must baptize Him in the Jordan. God demands that of him.
▪︎ And Jesus must fulfill justice.
When He goes into the water, it speaks to Him of the waves of the wrath of God.
He didn’t need that baptism for himself. He was Pure and Holy.
But as substitute, He had taken the blame to fulfill justice. That debt cries out – according to God’s demand – for payment. God’s virtues have been violated.
There can be satisfaction of justice only, when the payment is done in full.
How great is the Lord Jesus here in His obedience. He already sees the cup in His Father’s hand, which He will soon drink.
“It is fitting for Me to fulfill all righteousness”.
