Matthew 3:14 NASB
But John tried to prevent Him, saying,
I have need to be baptized by You,
and do You come to me?
Devotional
The Lord Jesus came to John with the request to be baptized by him in the Jordan.
It turns out that the Baptist knows Him in this particular moment.
It has not been hid from him by the light of the Holy Ghost, that here before him, stands the great King, Whose herald he is. So He is not a penitent who needs the forgiveness of sin.
How will he baptize Him. Who stands so infinitely above him?
He feels guilty before the Righteous, as unholy before the Holy One. I must be baptized by Him! This is how Johannes experiences this moment. That’s why he refuses to do it.
And it is clear here that in John this is a very strong refusal.
It is understandable. In a sense it comes from self-knowledge.
But still … the Lord Jesus asks it of John.
John does not understand that it is necessary for the Christ to be baptized for him and for the whole work of salvation.
Just then will he receive the fruit of Him who stands at the beginning of His substitutionary work.
