Devotional
Jesus gave him to his mother.
A joyful procession with Jesus in the middle meets a mourning procession on their way to a funeral.
A widow lost her only son.
From now on she will be alone in the world.
Have no support for her old age.
And be at the mercy of vague charity.
Is this a glad story?
Yes, for the Christ wants to restore the broken and the sorrowful.
He raises the dead boy.
Great, but why this boy and not all the others?
A double sign happens here.
- First that through the revival he helps the needy mother. As later the raising of Dorcas (Acts 9:39) helped the widows in Joppa.
- The other side is that that cheerful boy was given a very clear task. Jesus gave him back to his mother to take care of her. What does that tell us?
He who is raised from the death of sin, born again to a new life, has a job! Caring for others, in need of body and soul.
