1 Peter 1:6
Wherein ye greatly rejoice,
though now for a season,
if need be,
ye are in heaviness
through manifold temptations
Devotional
Sweet are the uses of adversity.
Shakespeare
In the National Soaring Contest in 1953, Lt. Robert M. Stanley soared 17,265 feet above the point of release. The contestants had just taken off when a sudden storm arose.
Most of them landed at once, but Lt. Stanley faced the storm and rode the threatening winds to achieve his victory.
Without faithfulness in the face of dangers and difficulties achievement is impossible.
Likewise, saintliness is not achieved without faithfulness in trials.
▪︎ Bedford jail challenged John Bunyan to write The Pilgrim’s Progress.
▪︎ The bitter fires of persecution prepared Martin Luther to nail his theses to the door of the church at Wittenberg and to translate the Bible into the language of the people.
▪︎ Out of severe mental suffering George Matheson composed the hymn: “O Love that wilt not let me go.”
Great souls are revealed by severe trials. They do something to us and with us.
They make us strong and enable us to live noble Christian lives.
Prayer suggestion
▪︎ Ask your Father in heaven to help you to be faithful in the trying circumstances of life.
▪︎ Ask your Father to grant you grace to face, and be strong in every trial
