This was the one of the first materials I used to spread the Gospel in a Bible stand at the market in Rotterdam. We were using the pictures (posters) as a kind of flip over.
Later I met in South Africa (Fishhook- Near Cape town) a missionary (Was His name Gschwent ? – I forgot) who before published the materials in Switzerland. And he then allowed me to use, and copy it. That was nice of him, but I didn’t have any of the materials anymore.
Years later I received a very old, torn booklet from an old pastor, who deceased a few years ago. And recently it fell into my hands, and although it is very old, I still believe this can help people, and remembering the permission, I decided to publish it on my website, with the prayer that it again will touch the hearts of many.
So let us begin with the foreword that was in it.
PREFACE
We have to go back something like 250 years to find the origin of this booklet, for it was in the early 1700’s that one first appeared in French.
Unfortunately, this original work has been lost, but it is known that a German translation was published at Würzburg in 1732.
Since then it appeared in many other languages also.
Nearly 150 years later, in 1879, Dr. E. Faber, a German theologian, prepared an edition in Chinese. This has had a wide circulation, though it has passed through numerous revisions.
Now (this “now” points to a date over 60 years ago) a fresh edition is being called for, so the opportunity has been taken of preparing an entirely new set of drawings and of rewriting the explanatory text.
Fundamentally the purpose and message of the booklet remains the same: to show the utter depravity of man and the full and effective salvation that is to be found in Jesus Christ.
The pictures illustrate by symbols what the heart of man is like.
Each symbol is carefully described and frequently there are also references to the Scriptures given. The booklet was written so it could be put into the hands of those who have not previously heard the Gospel, for the essence of the Gospel is given in its pages.
Or it may be committed to Christians who themselves will be able to use it in explaining the way of salvation to others
As this booklet goes into print with its accompanying pictures, our prayer is that the Lord will continue to bless its message to all to whose notice it comes.
May they in turn be encouraged to tell others the wonderful news of redemption, that the Gospel of God may be spread abroad.
