Amos 6:11
For, behold, the LORD (JHWH) commandeth,
and he will smite the great house with breaches,
and the little house with clefts.
This could also be translated with:
There will be cracks in the major houses (Israel) and the small houses (Judah).
Cracks are caused by lack of maintenance. And that could, in this case refer to the fact that the people would be imprisoned, and the houses would be empty.
The Prophet Amos has been portrayed as a man who preached ancient socialism. Yes, one could even defend a revolution against the established order by him.
However, this view stems from a very one-sided approach to its prophetic message. Indeed we can read that he was against the lush life of the rich.
▪ Until our time, wealth is a temptation, which means that we can forget God and the neighbor by it.
▪ However, poverty and lack can also make people sin, and get off the path of the Lord.
In today’s text, therefore, the judgment is not just pronounced against the rich in their large houses, but also against the less fortunate in their small houses.
Sin is not in wealth or poverty in itself, but in us misusing both of them.
Whatever our financial situation may be, we have to keep our hope on the Lord alone, and also today we have to serve our neighbor.
