Dear friends, at the time I had all the symptoms of a man who died; I was not breathing, had no heartbeat, was cold, and I could not hear or see anything with my eyes or ears, I experienced very strongly the presence of a man who stayed with me all the time. My spirit was still very much alive.
I guess it was the same with the Christ. Jesus was put to death in the flesh, but was still very much alive in the spirit. His spirit was not damaged by the whole ordeal He went through, to set us free from the curse of sin.
Even when the world considered Him to be dead, He was still Lord and master over all.
Now I have a mystery to tell you.
While you are still alive you can be of the same mind; dead to your flesh and it’s desires, dead to the worldly desires that still may be in your heart, but only, and very much alive to the Spirit.
Through the new life in Jesus which you have received, you are able to refuse to give in to the lusts of the flesh, so you may fill the rest of your life on earth not with the desires of fleshly men, but to the purpose that God has for you.
It was for this reason that the Gospel, the good news of Jesus, was given to you, while you were still dead. But now you are alive in Christ Jesus.
1 Peter 4:1-2,6
¹Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh,
arm yourselves also with the same purpose,
because he who has suffered in the flesh
has ceased from sin,
²so as to live the rest of the time
in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men,
but for the will of God.
⁶The gospel has
for this purpose been preached
even to those who are dead,
that though they are
judged in the flesh as men,
they may live in the spirit
according to the will of God.
