Proverbs 01:07
The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge:
[but] fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Devotional
The words “The fear of the Lord is the principle of knowledge” are the core proverb for the entire book of Proverbs.
It is all about the fear of the Lord in all of our lives.
This does not mean fear or a servile fear of the Lord.
▪︎ The servile fear is characterized by the filial fear in this, that it is afraid of the Lord.
▪︎ The servile fear also always looks for a reward. So it is not with the filial fear of God.
Out of esteem for the Lord, and out of love for Him, a child of the Lord, filled with filial fear, will desire to serve the Lord according to His commandments.
This filial fear of the Lord, then, also entails great reverence for Him.
It is, as our text says, the principle of knowledge.
Its root is in tender godliness.
If the fear of the Lord may be our portion, we shall also know how we ought to live.
We must all learn that now.
And if you ask from Whom we should receive this teaching, there is only one answer, namely from the Lord.
May you ask often for His teaching for this life and for the life to come.
